Yo Dot returns with a slice of soulful boom bap

First impressions

It's been a while since we've heard much from Yo Dot. As a member of the Umbrella Music Group crew in the early '10s he was one of the city's most visible rappers, but he's spent the last five years mostly out of the spotlight, save for the occasional feature or performance.

The latest single from his upcoming EP "Self Checkout," "Yes" shows Yo Dot's M.O. hasn't changed much: He's still mixing the grimy with the sublime. The track features a soulful hook from Milwaukee singer Marx Solvia, whose smooth voice offsets Yo Dot's cutthroat rhymes.

Stream "Yes" below. Yo Dot's "Self Checkout" EP is out tomorrow, Sept. 20.
