The state of hip-hop concerts in Milwaukee

We think the Miller High Life Theatre has finally found its niche—in the old(er) school hip-hop scene. DJ Kool Herc was there earlier this summer and we’ll be seeing Rakim, Slick Rick, Doug E Fresh and more there this week.

The Rave has really been Milwaukee’s main hip-hop venue for awhile now, but the standing-room-only venue is probably better suited for the Lil Xan crowd, leaving a large demographic of hip-hop fans underserved in Milwaukee.

We love the idea of an older demographic being able to go out to a more comfortable venue like the Miller High Life Theatre to see a hip-hop show with the option to sit down, get a nice drink and avoid being shoulder-to-shoulder in a packed crowd to get a decent sight line to the stage.

We’ll be keeping an eye on the theatre’s concert calendar. We’re predicting that you’ll be hearing about more hot things coming to this this venue soon.

Each Thursday morning on Radio Milwaukee, the Journal Sentinel’s Piet Levy and 88Nine’s Jordan Lee talk about the music coming into Milwaukee and the music coming out of Milwaukee on Tap’d In.
