Milwaukee Film's Cine Sin Fronteras program explores and unpacks issues surrounding identity, culture, family, history and modernity within the Latinx community. The program will include nine feature films and three short pre-feature films, hailing from the United States, Mexico, Cuba, Brazil, El Salvador, Guatemala and Argentina. The Milwaukee Film Festival runs from Oct. 17, 2019 to Oct. 31, 2019.
This year’s films bring humanity to highly politicized issues like the rise and exposure of immigrant detention centers, showcase the power of art and culture in healing, explore Afro-Latinx identity, and addresses the intertwined issues of family, identity and belonging.
Directed by Eli Jacobs-Fantauzzi, " Bakosó: AfroBeats de Cuba" is an exciting musical journey that follows DJ Jigüe through the past and present of modern Cuban dance music. In this film you will learn of the genre’s African origins and deep influences of the African culture that still manifests itself in today's Latinx music. Along with this documentary, below you will have a chance to discover other great screenings and events happening during the film festival.

Thursday, Oct. 10, 2019 from 6 p.m . to 8 p.m., Latino Arts, Inc. (1028 S 9th St) will host a free and family-friendly event which will include live music by DJ Kenny Perez of 88Nine Radio Milwaukee, film trailers, refreshments, giveaways, and special guests.
Saturday, Oct. 19, 2019 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Zocaló will celebrate the variety of Latinx programming Cine Sin Fronteras is bringing your way at this year’s Milwaukee Film Festival with a variety of food and drink at Zocaló Bar and Food Truck Park! Our friends who put on the best reggaeton party in Milwaukee, Agua de Rosa will be DJ'ing the night. First 30 attendees to present their proof of purchase to a Cine Sin Fronteras film gets a free Michelada.
Saturday, Oct. 26, 2019 from 9 p.m. to Midnight, 88Nine Radio Milwaukee will play host to the after premiere party for " Bakosó: AfroBeats of Cuba." Afrolatinidad: Afro-Latinx Identity on Film & Beyond Panel
Sunday, Oct. 27, 2019 at 11:30 a.m., the Milwaukee Film Festival Lounge will host a Film & Beyond panel on the rich African roots that have influenced cultural legacies throughout the Americas for centuries. From beats like Bakosó in Cuba and Bomba in Puerto Rico to stories like LatiNegras and Decade of Fire, this panel discussion, curated by artists, storytellers and organizers, will highlight and celebrate the AfroLatinx narrative.
