Five things to do this weekend in Milwaukee

Cold? All but one of these events is heated...Here's what we'll be doing this weekend in Milwaukee.
#1

Nate Bargatze

Who doesn’t love a laugh? I do. If you don’t then well, whatever man. For some reason, I never went to see live comedy when I was a younger man. The folly of my younger years was probably all the humor I needed to see live. Now however, I see as many comics as I can and this weekend features a couple of interesting ones. It looks like Chris D’Elia's Saturday night show at the Riverside is about to sell out, and he does seem to have a higher profile and a decent Netflix special, but for my money, I’d go check out Nate Bargatze at Turner Hall.

Why you ask? Well, Bargatze’s got his own Netflix special too and I just think he’s a little funnier. He’s also about to get his own show on Fox, which is cool to write, but matters less to me than the love he gets from fellow comedians. Did I mention that he’s funny?
Saturday at 8 p.m. @ Turner Hall

Adults Only Old Skool Sk8 Jam

When I was a kid, my grade school pretty much sucked. They did have one thing that I absolutely loved however—three times a year they took the older kids to the roller skating rink. Oh boy, that was my jam. I could skate hella good by the end of it all. I met girls, listened to music and it was the only party I could really get down at. I still miss that age in my life because of that.

Anyway, I know I ain’t the only one because some genius has organized a skate jam for grown folks on the first Friday of the month through June! This week, it's happening 8 p.m. to midnight with old school jams to suit.

and something to get you in the mood...

#3

Trapper Schoepp

88Nine favorite Trapper Schoepp will be here for a session on Friday, but the real show and the release of his new album "Primetime Illusion" will be going down on Saturday night at the Back Room. The album was produced in Milwaukee by Patrick Sansone (Wilco, Robyn Hitchcock) and sees Schoepp reaching for his own place in the canon with a new round of character-driven songs and stories, acerbic wit and songs about the struggle to fulfill their own American dream. Go see a native son make his mark on a stage that just keeps on getting bigger.
Saturday at 8 p.m. @ The Back Room

Mitten Fest 2019

Are you:

  1. So Wisconsin that you’re totally unfazed by subzero temperatures?
  2. Horribly lonely and dying of FOMO, starved for companionship because of the polar vortex?
  3. A resident of Bay View or someone with access to transportation?

Well, if you said yes to any of the above, you should probably head to Burnhearts' Mitten Fest this Saturday for some day drinking and music with a crowd of thousands turning commiseration into congratulation for standing up to winter in the fight for the right to party.

Trust me you won’t be alone, especially with a music lineup featuring Abby Jeanne, Vincent Van Great, Surgeons In Heat, Cashfire Sunset, Nickel&Rose and DJ Chris Schulist. You’ll worry less about the cold because that’s a hot lineup. Add food vendors, a craft fair and a special drink menu and that’s how you beat winter. Plus, feel free to bring non-perishables, cash or warm clothes to donate to Hunger Task Force.
Saturday at noon @ Burnhearts in Bay View

In The Mix Live! (Sound Travels edition)

If I was a journalist, this suggestion would be what they call a conflict of interest. I am no journalist, however. I’m a DJ and so is Kenny Perez, the host of In The Mix on our airwaves every Saturday night. LVL Dance plays host to the live extension of the on air show and the erstwhile La Cage continues their long tradition of being the spot for house music and EDM.

Kenny’s been on the house scene for longer than I remember, so I was totally flattered he asked me to drop in for a set this Saturday. Though I’m not known for house music per se, I do love all music and have plenty of classic house music. Though I’m sure I’ll be spinning some global hose as well (because global music is what I am known for). So if dance music is your thing, come dance; we’ll be there.
Saturday at 9 p.m. @ LVL Dance
