Know Your Price: Valuing Black Lives and Property in Milwaukee
July 22 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pmFree
Milwaukee is called the most segregated city in America and one of the worst cities for Black people, which are often attributed to the perceived results of “Black people’s collective choices and moral failings.” But the reality is, “there is nothing wrong with Black people that ending racism can’t solve.”
Andre M. Perry, fellow in the Brookings Metropolitan Policy Program, underlines this point several times in his new book “Know Your Price: Valuing Black Lives and Property in America’s Black Cities.”
On Wednesday, July 22nd at 2pm CST, Radio Milwaukee Community Engagement Manager, Maddy Riordan, will be joined by Andre M. Perry for a discussion of his book and how the themes and ideas related directly back to Milwaukee’s Black community. The emphasis will be on valuing Black lives and property in our city and how we can flip the narrative to talk about the ASSETS that our Black residents and Black neighborhoods have.
We’ll also be joined by Deatra Kemp, Homebuyer Program Manager with Acts Housing, and Keith Stanley, Executive Director of Near West Side Partners, Inc. and Avenues West Association, to talk about programs and initiatives that Milwaukee has in place to encourage homeownership and community development that includes the community’s voice.
This event is free and open to the public. RSVP with valid email is required as you will be sent a private Zoom link to join!
