Film Screening and Conversation – Blue Like Me

August 25 @ 7:00 pm - 8:15 pm

‘Blue Like Me’ is a documentary that profiles Indian-American artist Siona Benjamin. Raised in the small Bene Israel Jewish community in Mumbai, India, Benjamin’s art fuses world religions with eastern myths and western pop culture to create vibrant new worlds. ‘Blue Like Me’ travels with Benjamin to Mumbai, revisiting the Bene Israel Jews portrayed in her recent Fulbright project. Siona Benjamin is a daughter of Israel, born in India, and a citizen of the world – and that world is blue.

Join our partners at America’s Black Holocaust Museum for a post-screening conversation with Chelsea Cross, a consultant with Crossroad Solutions, member of the Board of Directors of Tikkun Ha-Ir of Milwaukee, Milwaukee’s point person for Edot Midwest Regional Jewish Diversity and Racial Justice Collaborative, and Nirmal Raja, an interdisciplinary artist, mentor for the Milwaukee Artists Resource Network, recipient of the Mildred L. Harpole Artists of the Year 2022 award from the Milwaukee Arts Board. They will discuss themes explored in the film including issues of identity, gender, and notions of inclusion and exclusion, framed by their own experiences and perspectives as well as some of the projects and initiatives they are involved with.

America’s Black Holocaust Museum galleries will be open 10 AM – 7 PM before the program. Explore the history of African Americans from pre-captivity to the present, including their integral role in United States history and culture. Free admission with the purchase of a program ticket.
