What Lies Beneath: A Virtual Tour of Milwaukee’s Greenwood Cemetery

October 18 @ 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm

$7 – $10

Located next to Forest Home Cemetery, Greenwood Cemetery is one of the oldest Jewish cemeteries in the greater Milwaukee area, dating back to 1871. Greenwood began as a German Jewish cemetery and continued that trend for fifty years. By the mid-1920s other members of Milwaukee’s Jewish community chose to have their family burials at Greenwood. Greenwood Cemetery is the first Wisconsin cemetery to be an approved cemetery provider by The Green Burial Council.

Many well-known names associated with the development of Milwaukee’s Jewish community are buried here. Join docent Paul Haubrich for a virtual tour exploring the history of the cemetery, its architecture, and the lives of several individuals buried there. Paul is professor emeritus at UW-Milwaukee and a former chair of the Board of Directors for the Forest Home Historic Preservation Association. He has extensive knowledge of Milwaukee’s history and its founders.

Those profiled include:
– Sol Abrams – Vice-president and general manager of Schlitz Brewing Company
– David Adler – founder of David Adler & Sons’ Clothing Company; president of Greenwood Cemetery Association
– Henry M. Benjamin – acting mayor of Milwaukee; founder of H.M. Benjamin Coal Company
– Sophie Cohen- philanthropist; donated land for Children’s Outing Association’s Camp Sidney Cohen
– Oscar Greenwald – manager of Milwaukee’s Gimbels department store
– Lizzie Kander – founder of The Settlement Cook Book; progressive reformer known as the “Jane Addams of Milwaukee”
– Nathan Pereles – first Jewish attorney in Milwaukee
– Nat Stone – president of Boston Store; president of Federated Jewish Charities (precursor to Milwaukee Jewish Federation)
