I Am a Story: Self-Portraits
October 21 @ 10:00 am - 4:00 pm
An event every week that begins at 10:00 am on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, repeating until January 22, 2021
The exhibition, drawn from The Warehouse’s permanent collection, features more than 50 self-portraits by prominent artists from 10 countries on 5 continents, including works by Cindy Sherman, Jim Dine, David Hockney, Carrie Mae Weems and William Kentridge.
The artists have created representations of themselves in a variety of mediums ranging from painting and photography, to ceramic, stone, glass, and video. The work varies from small scale intimate portraits to larger than life depictions of the artists. I Am a Story explores questions of identity and artistic intention. Through their work, the artists alternatively reveal themselves to the viewer, while at other times they conceal or disguise themselves. Self-portraiture has a long lineage in the history of art. Through the works in the exhibition, the artists often show themselves actively working at their craft and engaging with the artistic tradition of self-portraiture, at times very directly.
The guest curator of this exhibition is Nick Pipho. Pipho previously curated exhibitions at the Union Art Gallery while completing his Master’s degree in Art History at UW-Milwaukee. He also assists with The Warehouse’s exhibitions as a preparator.
