Brewers Community Foundation sets date for annual food drive

Hunger Task Force

The Brewers Community Foundation’s pre-Thanksgiving food collection has gathered nearly 1 million pounds of food and thousands of turkeys across 12 years (and two stadium names). It will no doubt add to those numbers in a big way next Friday, Nov. 22, when the popular drive-thru donation event returns to American Family Field.

Held in partnership with the Hunger Task Force and CBS 58, the food drive will run from 5 a.m. to 6 p.m. as vehicles of all kinds wind through the parking lot to drop off their donations next to Helfaer Field. Once again, the team has a couple merchandise incentives lined up: a Freddy Peralta soccer jersey for the first 400 donors, and a Brewers puffy vest for anyone who donates three or more frozen turkeys (while supplies last).

Past years have seen members of the team show up to help with the collection, although those appearances tend to be more of a pleasant surprise than a pre-announced detail. Organizers did mention a few famous faces who will be on hand, including Bernie Brewer, the Famous Racing Sausages and various personalities from CBS 58, which will broadcast live from the event (along with Telemundo Wisconsin) throughout the day.

In addition to frozen turkeys, the Hunger Task Force is looking for healthy, non-perishable food items like canned low-sodium vegetables, 100% fruit juice and healthy breakfast cereal. Those options (and similar ones) help the organization serve more than 50,000 people on a monthly basis, including seniors, families and children.

“Our network of food pantries and meal sites has seen a nearly 30 percent increase in children, families and seniors seeking help compared to last year,” Hunger Task Force CEO Matt King said in a release.

“Feeding people today and ending future hunger takes our whole community, and we’re grateful for this long-standing partnership with the Brewers Community Foundation and CBS 58 to collect healthy food to provide more healthy holiday meals for those in need.”
