Saz’s brings back fundraiser for Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Saz's

We’re just a few days away from October, which — among other things — is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. For those 31 days, Saz’s State House will set aside a couple menu items and donate a portion of their proceeds to local organization ABCD: After Breast Cancer Diagnosis.

Of course, there’s a catchy (and maybe a teensy-weensy bit crude) tie-in encapsulated in the campaign’s name: Buy a Rack, Save a Rack. The first part refers to the meatiest member of the special menu, which includes:

  • A full rack of Saz’s baby back ribs, with sides of house slaw and housemade mac-n-cheese
  • A deep-fried pink lemonade bite, Sporkie and People’s Choice Award winner at this year’s Wisconsin State Fair
  • A Central Standard cherry mule (also available non-alcoholic upon request)

From Oct. 1 to 31, you can support ABCD by ordering any of those three items — or make a meal of it and get all of them — at Saz’s State House, 5539 W. State St. The offer is good whether you eat at the restaurant or place a carryout order.

If you’re not familiar with ABCD, this locally based organization provides customized one-on-one support totally free to anyone affected by a breast-cancer diagnosis. The service is meant to complement the medical team and pulls from a pool of 250+ professionally trained mentors/breast-cancer survivors. Having that large group of individuals allows ABCD to pair someone with a similar diagnosis, treatment plan, interests, personality traits and family dynamics.

The organization was founded by Melodie Wilson Oldenburg in 1999 — seven years after the former WTMJ and WITI news anchor announced on-air that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer. Unfortunately, she died of the disease in 2009, but her legacy remains through ABCD, which celebrated its 25th anniversary this year.

You can learn more about Saz’s October campaign here and ABCD on the organization’s website or by watching the video below.
