This morning, 88Nine joined a collection of non-commercial stations around the country to play — for the first time ever — “Crystal Breath,” the new single off Kim Deal’s upcoming debut solo album.

The former Pixies member and frontwoman of The Breeders has done the lone-wolf thing before, self-releasing a 10-song collection on 7-inch vinyl across five parts back in 2013. She opted for something more conventional this time while maintaining her exacting approach, ultimately coming up with 11 songs for Nobody Loves You More, which is scheduled for release Nov. 22.

Two of the tracks — “Are You Mine?” and “Wish I Was” — date back more than a decade, with Deal penning them in 2011. More recently, she laid down the last material for the new album in November 2022 with the late Steve Albini at Electrical Audio in Chicago.

Technically, the lead single from the record was “Coast,” although we didn’t know it was attached to a larger project when that one came out in July. Compared with that breezy and horn-laden number, “Crystal Breath” is a fuzzed-out track with pulsating beats and doesn’t spare the distortion. “It’s kind of about self-loathing and obsessive-compulsive behavior,” Deal shared, before adding sunnily, “but set to a dance beat.”

In addition to spinning the song on 88Nine, we included it right here so you can enjoy it on demand. Give it a listen and then head to this link for more info about pre-ordering/saving Nobody Loves You More via your platform of choice.
