It’s an absolute crap part of life that moments of unbridled joy can be followed so closely by intense sadness. The Bay View community has experienced that over the last several days, as Cara Corder — a team member at The Vanguard, where Jack White played a set late Thursday night — was seriously injured in a hit-and-run just after 2:30 a.m. Saturday.
According to reports, Corder was crossing the street on the 2900 block of South Kinnickinnic Avenue when a vehicle struck her at a high rate of speed. That vehicle and another were street racing at the time, and both fled the scene.
The community responded almost immediately with a GoFundMe page to provide financial support for Corder’s medical expenses and loss of income. As of this writing, that effort is about 56% of the way to its $150,000 goal. Among the names listed as donors is White, who’s a longtime friend of The Vanguard co-owner Chris Schulist.
The organizer of the GoFundMe campaign, local musician Asher Gray, has posted several encouraging updates in the days following the incident — including movement in Corder’s extremities, relief from intracranial pressure and successful surgery to repair her broken arm.
While positive news is always wonderful to hear in the wake of things like this, Corder still has a long road ahead of her and needs further support. So, if you’d like to follow the example set by Jack White and so many members of our community, visit the GoFundMe page and give what you can.
In addition, if you have any information that might lead to the arrest of those responsible for the incident, contact the Milwaukee Police Department at 414-935-7219 or use the anonymous Crime Stoppers line 414-224-TIPS (8477).
