Every week, the State of Sound podcast welcomes an artist from our monthly concert series into the studio to go deep on one of their songs. For more info on the live show, including how to get tickets, visit the event page.

Milwaukee punk-rock trio Jinksie’s music was literally born in the basement — written, crafted and rehearsed on the subterranean level of guitarist/vocalist Wendy Norton’s home.

It’s from those depths that she, Amelinda Burich (bass/vocals) and Ryan King (drums) continue to pile their years of combined experience to turn out songs that are truly fun, especially when experienced live. Jinksie’s music recalls the punk spirit of the ’70s and ’80s, and echoes elements of Milwaukee’s early scene that birthed iconic bands like The Haskels, The Shivvers and Oil Tasters.

Norton describes Jinksie as “a veritable Old Country Buffet of emotions and nods to familiar early punk rock ethos,” with a sound that’s undeniably cathartic and classic all at once (as well as totally down with being a little corny). As the band proudly declares, “Whether you're looking for a tender Go-Gos style track to get ready for a Saturday night out or a heavy banger to smash your ex’s stuff to, Jinksie’s gotcha covered!”

I got to chat with Jinksie about their song, “Freudian Slit,” which embodies the trio’s in-your-face spirit and revels in its live performance energy. To hear the conversation and part of Jinksie’s set from our State of Sound live show, find us on your preferred podcast platform or use the player at the top of the page.

While you listen, take a trip to the State of Sound event page and grab tickets to our next live show Saturday, June 1, featuring Melee The Queen, Cyrus Chrome, Lady Sabo, Vacancy Chain and DJ Sammy T.
