Every week, the State of Sound podcast welcomes an artist from our monthly concert series into the studio to go deep on one of their songs. For more info on the live show, including how to get tickets, visit the event page.

This episode’s guest, Austin Wood of Milwaukee’s Blacktop, joined us for 88Nine’s State of Sound concert showcase in May. The group’s sound was well-represented that night, resting gently between the genres of folk, surf rock and dream pop.

With soft-spoken vocals, washed-out guitars and acoustic percussion/rhythmic elements, the hallmarks of Blacktop’s music stem from Wood’s multi-instrumentalistic tendencies. He and I chatted about the inspiration behind “Expectations,” an easygoing song about being an idealist that incorporates the calm of the natural world, sounding right at home with the folky soft-rock greats of yore.
