By exploring her roots, MONOGEM's 'Lemon Tree' truly blossoms

Curating La Alternativa every week provides a fresh journey into music, as well as a sense of peace. It's a platform that allows me to explore musical talent and uncover artists who deserve to be heard. From soulful singer-songwriters to dynamic rappers, from the vibrancy of youth to the timelessness of legendary talent, there's always something special waiting to be discovered.

This episode is no exception. Among the truly wonderful musicians we feature, MONOGEM holds a particularly cherished place on our airwaves. Her track "Dame La Fuerza" was a highlight of 2021, receiving heavy rotation on 88Nine. More recently, she introduced her newest single, "Lemon Tree," as a serene ballad celebrating life's simplicity.

With its gentle melody, organic production and enchanting saxophone accompaniment, the song reminds us to cherish our loved ones and find joy in life's smallest moments. This release marks the beginning of a series leading to a follow-up of her debut bilingual album, Gardenia, which garnered over 12 million streams.

Reflecting on "Lemon Tree," MONOGEM shared, “With all of the heaviness in the world, this song reminds me of the most important thing in my world — to squeeze my son a little tighter while I still can and cherish every moment of our time together.”

For MONOGEM, embracing her Mexican heritage has been pivotal in shaping her musical identity. Beginning with 2019's debut Spanish single, "Soy Lo Que Soy," she has consistently explored and celebrated her roots. From haunting renditions of classics like "Bésame Mucho" to her debut album, MONOGEM's music is a testament to her grandmother's wisdom, urging her to never forget where she came from and to keep the culture alive.

As we engage with MONOGEM's latest release, let's embrace the richness of her music and the journey it represents. Then keep the exploration going by checking out the many artists featured in our archive of past shows.
