State of Sound: Valerie Lighthart

A woman sings into a microphone with her eyes closed in a darkened performance space with a woman playing violin in the background.
Jen Ellis

Her projects embrace the surreal, but we can assure you Valerie Lighthart was really in our Walker's Point studios for this episode of State of Sound. The independent pop artist brings an almost-giddy energy to everything she does, which can sometimes contradict the darkness that often layers over her music and accompanying videos. She brought four of those songs to our stage, talked about her "meandering journey" — singing to her first-grade class every Friday, writing books, making films for a decade — and described how she brings all of that to her music.
