Every Monday, 88Nine music director Erin Wolf shares a sonic gem she found using her nearly 20 years of new-music exploration experience. You can hear all her discoveries at 2 p.m. every Sunday on What’s All This: Adventures in New Music.
“Vampire Tongues” hits the classic marks of Animal Collective songs, which makes sense considering the people behind it.
One half of the iconic indie group, Panda Bear (aka Noah Lennox) and Avey Tare (David Portner), joined up on the song and came away with something a little zany and warbly yet still still holds its focus thanks to the crisp beats and distilled creativity — all signs of two creative minds knowing when to rein things in. “Right now, the basic process of making music is more important to me than any outcome,” Tare said. “It’s a process of learning.”
“Collaboration is as much about learning from someone as it is creating something with someone,” he continued. “There’s a nice surprise element. I wonder: What is this person going to do with this idea? Where is this song going to go when someone else is guiding the ship? I’m doing the research. Here’s me attempting to learn something from my old friend Noah.”
Find the new single, “Vampire Tongues,” out now on Domino Records, and be sure to check out a fresh batch of tunes on What’s All This: Adventures in New Music at 2 p.m. Sundays on 88Nine.
