Every Monday, 88Nine music director Erin Wolf shares a sonic gem she found using her nearly 20 years of new-music exploration experience. You can hear all her discoveries at 2 p.m. every Sunday on What’s All This: Adventures in New Music.
After releasing the delightful and chill Underdressed At the Symphony this past March, Faye Webster gave us a couple little bonuses recently. Not only did the Atlanta-based artist announce a tour stop in Milwaukee early next year, she fanfared that tour announcement in typically smooth fashion with a new suavely-stringed single called “After the First Kiss.”
In the song, she sings about those first golden moments of new love: “I take her picture when I close my eyes after the first kiss.” This is the stuff daydreams are made of, and Webster knows how to add all those sonic nuances, just so, for emphasis. Sonically, it’s nothing out of range for her. It’s simply an enjoyable song to sink into and welcome in that dreamy state.
For an unexpected twist, check out the accompanying video that features a medieval battle scene with Webster playing her part as a goblin, all while falling in love. It’s epic, comical and endearing all at once.
Find “After the First Kiss” out now on Secretly Canadian Records and on this episode of What’s All This (as well as the rest of the songs in the list below) by using the player at the top of the page. Then be sure to check out a fresh batch of tunes at 2 p.m. every Sunday on 88Nine.
