This weekend, all manner of ghosts and goblins and things kids actually dress up as will tromp around our neighborhoods in search of sugar. So let’s do a little tidying and make sure things look nice before they get there.
The Big Clean MKE is one of many things making its return after a multi-year COVID absence, providing an opportunity for us to gather and get our neighborhoods looking spiffy. It starts at 11:30 a.m. this Saturday, Oct. 29, and wraps up at 3 p.m., with clean-up events happening all around the city. Here’s where people are meeting to start the day:
- Butterfly Park, 37th and Meinecke
- Running Rebels, 1300 W. Fond du Lac Ave.
- Safe and Sound, 24th and Vine
- Near West Side Partners, 29th and Clybourn
- Riverworks Development Corporation, SE corner of Booth and Locust
- Westcare, 4th and Wright
- Southside Organizing Center, 1300 S. Layton Blvd.
You don’t need to bring a single thing. Organizers supply all the clean-up stuff you’ll need, plus you get a free Big Clean MKE t-shirt. Then, when everything looks neat and tidy, everyone who helped is invited to the Wisconsin Black Historical Society Museum for a volunteer appreciation luncheon at 3 p.m.
The Big Clean MKE is dedicated to the memory of Special Enforcement Inspector Greg “Ziggy” Zyszkiewicz, who was killed in an attempted carjacking while working on the North Side.
