Forget Mother's Day brunch, 3 unique ways to treat Milwaukee moms

Mothers Day in Milwaukee

Each Friday at 8 am on 88Nine, Milwaukee Magazine’s dining critic, Ann Christenson, and 88Nine foodie Tarik Moody discuss Milwaukee’s culinary and restaurant culture.

On this week’s show, we talked about unique ways to treat your mom this Mother's Day. We also talked a new French restaurant coming to Washington Heights; a charity event where local chefs reimagine McDonald's dishes, and a Rose wine dinner at Supper.

If you are a chef or a restaurant and have an announcement or an event, please send any information or press release to

Mother's Day

Is you mom getting bored with brunch every year for Mother's Day? Or is your mom just not the brunch type?  Here are three unique ways to treat your mom right on Mother's Day.

1.  Milwaukee Pizza Bus Tour via Milwaukee Food & City Tours

Celebrate PIZZA with Milwaukee’s bus-driven Pizza Tour! Sample the quintessential thin crust pizza, grab gourmet slices of tomato goodness, and search for the most historic pies in town.

The tour goes from old school, 5-star pizzerias to newer, upscale establishments and enjoy a variety of unique tastes that they each offer. The tour concludes with a scoop of gelato!

The 3-hour bus tour will depart from West Milwaukee and feature substantial portions. Pizza slices, dessert, and round-trip transportation are included in the per person price. If your mom doesn't like pizza, there are other tours to check out.

2. Culinary school at Braise

How about taking a cooking class or a full semester mastering culinary skills?

Semester at Braise is a 10-week culinary boot camp that covers the fundamentals of cooking, baking, menu planning & wine pairing. Each student receives a textbook, chef coat, and apron. The course culminates with a Graduation Dinner in which the students prepare a 4-course meal for their family and friends alongside the Braise chefs.

If that is too intense for your mom, she can take a variety of cooking classes like Rustic Italian, Exploring India, Homemade Sausage, and more.

3. Wine and Cheese subscription from local start-up Bright Cellars

Found in 2014 by two MIT alumni, Bright Cellars is a monthly subscription service for wine. Each subscription is based off an individual’s personal taste which comes from an algorithm. Once you sign up on the site, you must take a quiz based on several attributes of flavor profiles like sweetness, bitterness, and others. After the quiz, Bright Cellars will create a list of suggested wines for your subscription. After you try the wines in your first box, you will rate and review the wines on the Bright Cellars site and the algorithm will develop better matches for your next box.

Bright Cellars also offer an artisan cheese subscription service to pair with your wine subscription. The cheese service works similar to the wine subscription. You have to take a quiz and then Bright Cellars will pick out the cheese that matches your profile the best.
