College volunteers help seniors prepare for winter

Marquette and UWM students participate in "Make a Difference Day"

Nearly 1,000 area college students hit the streets over the weekend, helping hundreds of elderly residents prepare their homes for the winter months.

The day of service was part of the annual "Make A Difference Day," organized by the Nonprofit Center of Milwaukee.  The event mobilized students from Marquette University and UW-Milwaukee -- as it has for the last 25 years -- sending them into neighborhoods around Milwaukee County.

Teams of students helped homeowners with raking and other landscaping projects, and after the work was finished, they were encouraged to stay and visit with the residents, too.

That's where I met Eleanor Gott, a homeowner at 29th and Vliet St.  She has lived in the same house since 1979 and had a team of four students helping her out with autumn projects.
