A beautiful old house in the Concordia neighborhood is for sale by the City of Milwaukee, and, at least on the outside, it has seen significant restoration.
But how did it get there in the first place? How exactly does one trace the roots of a century-old house? Keep scrolling to hear my conversation with OnMilwaukee's Bobby Tanzilo.

The facade of this historic home in the Concordia neighborhood has been completely renovated -- some $90,000 worth of work -- by the City of Milwaukee. And today the house, 2844 W. Kilbourn St, is on the market for just $40,000 as a foreclosure.
Inside, as OnMilwaukee's Bobby Tanzilo found out, there's still much work to do. But charm and potential abound; they just don't make homes like this anymore.
And who is "they" anyway?
Well, tracing the roots of the home's builder turned into a tricky task, as city records list the owner as H.J. Geerlings, a Dutch railroad foreman who lived in Milwaukee in the early 1900s. But it's unclear if the builder was him or his son, whose initials were also "H.J.", Tanzilo writes.
