$8 million development coming to Harambee neighborhood

A local charitable foundation is making a major investment in the Harambee neighborhood.

Bader Philantropies, one of Milwaukee most active and far reaching foundations, plans to move its global headquarters to a new site at Martin Luther King Drive and Chambers St.  The $8 million development, a combination of new construction and rehab of city owned buildings, is scheduled to open in summer of 2018.

"We hope to begin wave of development for that neighborhood," said Bader Philanthropies President and CEO Dan Bader.

(more below)

Harambee is the section of Milwaukee just to the west of Riverwest. (John Gurda took us there earlier this year.)  While parts of Harambee have seen significant investment -- most notably along the southern end of MLK Drive -- the Bader site will bring economic activity to the northern section of the neighborhood, to combat what Bader calls "spotty" development patterns.

And the move, according to Bader, represents the foundation living its mission.

"We won't just be reading about crime issues, we won't just be reading about struggles, we won't just watch it on TV.  It's going to a part of who we are."

He spoke with me more about the move and its motivation.
