Early Milwaukee firefighter redefines himself after career-altering injury

Normally on Urban Spelunking, OnMilwaukee's Bobby Tanzilo and I explore Milwaukee's history through the built environment.  Historic buildings or places are usually the focus -- and we've been to ton of them!

But this week, we're reversing the formula and zeroing in on one person -- a man who designed some buildings still seen in Milwaukee -- but did so unexpectedly, as a second career.

His name is Sebastian Brand, and early Milwaukeean, who worked as a firefighter in the 1870s.  After a devastating injury abruptly ended his career as an active duty firefighter, he continued to work with the Fire Department designing fire stations around Milwaukee.

And so many of them are still here today.

Listen to our interview for more of the story, and check out pictures and the complete article below.
