Peaceful demonstrations are certainly not new to American politics.
But with a new and polarizing administration, it seems more people are taking the to the streets in protest -- in record numbers -- and it's happening in Milwaukee.
But ensuring those protests remain peaceful, productive, and on message -- it's a big job.
And that's where SURJ Milwaukee is stepping in.
SURJ, short for "showing up for racial justice," is a group of politically active residents, organized almost entirely online, responsible for large scale local demonstrations supporting Black Lives Matter and local violence prevention initiatives.
But there's another side to SURJ, a quieter, educational facet of its mission. It regularly hosts workshops on Milwaukee-specific social justice issues like segregation, and it promotes a sense of cross-cultural understanding through educational sessions.
Last month, SURJ hosted a workshop called "Dear Fellow White People," based on the work of writer John Costello. The crowd broke into smaller groups to discuss pointers for white people wanting to get involved with People of Color-led social justice and activist causes.
