It's a heritage Milwaukee church near the Marquette University campus, celebrating 125 years of serving the community this year.
This week on Urban Spelunking, Bobby and I visit Church of the Gesu, 1145 W. Wisconsin Ave.
In the podcast, we talk about the church's famous architect, the original organ (still in use today) and the intricate stained glass, one of the best surviving examples of the craft in Milwaukee.
Bobby Tanzilo spoke with Marquette's William O'Brien for his column, who pointed out while the church is legally separate from the university, it has a long running connection.
"We have a very strong symbiotic relationship," O'Brien says. "I'd like to think the university couldn't get along without us, but I know we couldn't get along without them because of all the things, including IT infrastructure and phone systems, and all that stuff. We do graduations and stuff in the church, and we don't charge for that. Student chorus, student music groups perform in here. It's a really strong relationship."
