In a special proclamation back in 2005, Mayor Tom Barrett proclaimed February 23 as Fred Usinger Day. This special proclamation salutes Usinger's founder Fred Usinger, his legacy and the Milwaukee family business for its long standing good corporate citizenship and commitment to the betterment of Metropolitan Milwaukee and the Southeast Wisconsin area.
Fred Usinger Day also means free Usinger sausages for all. From 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., anyone who comes to the Old German Beer Hall in Milwaukee will get free bratwurst sausage, while supplies last (and they should last a while).
Founder of the Old German Beer Hall, Hans Weissgerber III said, "I think Milwaukeeans will agree there is no such thing as too many free bratwurst."
And the good news for Milwaukeeans is that there will be no shortage of sausages, since the Usinger Sausage factory is just across the street. Unfortunately, it is one per customer.
And in case you're worried about getting thirsty from all that free sausage, there will also be free samples of Hofbräu Munich beer. At 3 p.m., Frederick “Fritz” Usinger IV will tap a wooden keg of Hofbräu beer. Those in attendance will have the chance to raise a glass of beer in honor of this auspicious occasion.
In addition to free sausages on Saturday, the original Usinger Store across from the Beer Hall will be featuring special deals on brats, kielbasa, deli meats, Braunschweiger, summer sausage and more from February 20 through February 28, as a way to further celebrate Fred Usinger Day.
