Even when a building is torn down, its story remains — at least if OnMilwaukee’s Bobby Tanzilo has anything to do with it.
For this week’s episode of Urban Spelunking, we head to Wauwatosa to learn about one family’s popular bar on State Street, Hausch’s Tavern.
Drive past the site today and you’ll find a luxury apartment development, with a new pizza joint on the first floor, alongside the railroad tracks near Hart Park. No trace of the family or the business to be seen.
He learned how the family depended on that building for its livelihood. The tavern was open for roughly 60 years, including a brief stint as a grocery store during Prohibition.
It’s a reminder of how every building — standing or not — tells a story.
