Milwaukee Public Schools have added new graduation requirements affecting the class of 2015 and beyond.
High School students must now complete 20 hours of community service, take a course with a service learning experience, or take an online course.
It's part of a larger effort to prepare students for college.
"As colleges recruit, they want those kinds of kids in their programs, [students] who come to school excited to be at school because they have a purpose," said Community Service Coordinator Kathleen End.
Students who choose the community service option must get approval from an academic advisor. They must also complete a written essay about their experience.
