After the weekend’s events, my colleague Makenzie Boettcher and I hit the streets to talk to Sherman Park residents about the unfortunate events that played out near Sherman and Burleigh.
Some people didn’t want to talk with us at all, while others were more willing to speak about the events. But above all, we observed a distraught neighborhood reeling from a weekend of chaos.
One resident, who lives just a few blocks away from the burned BP station, shared her story with us. We’re not using her name or picture since she says speaking to the media is generally frowned upon by her neighbors, but her personal, firsthand account is powerful reminder of the barriers that exist in Milwaukee.

Everybody is crying the same way. I hurt the same way you do.
