Back in December, we did a story about the feature film, Give Me Liberty, that will be shot entirely in Milwaukee. Give Me Liberty will be a dark comedic thriller that explores relationships among a wild mix of characters chasing the elusive American Dream.  The film was recently awarded the Independent Film LA Film Festival Fast Track Fellowship.

Cannes Award winning director Kirill Mikhanovsky – whose film DUBROVSKY opened on 900 screens in Russia last year – and American playwright Alice Austen – whose recent adaptation of Orwell’s ANIMAL FARM opened this fall at the Steppenwolf Theatre to rave reviews, sold out houses and extended commercial run – have teamed up to write and produce GIVE ME LIBERTY, an irreverent feature-length dark comedy about the elusive American Dream and the wild mix of characters frantically chasing it.

GIVE ME LIBERTY has already been recognized as an irreverent, raw, cutting edge story about the comedy and heartbreak of being an immigrant in a struggling American city and a wild mix of characters frantically chasing the elusive American Dream. GIVE ME LIBERTY has been compared by film industry executives to such blockbusters as FARGO, LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE and PULP FICTION. Benh Zeitlin, who directed the Oscar-nominated and Cannes Award winning BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD, wrote that the script “rocked his world” and made him want to run out and shoot a film. Dick Blau founder of the UWM Film School wrote, “The script is wildly inventive, uproariously funny, and completely, sweetly irreverent in all respects, crossing cultures, not to speak of red lines, with complete, infectious abandon. If you like your films tart, you’ll want to help get this one made.”

Starting August 15 & 16 the film’s producers and director will be hosting community casting sessions (no acting experience necessary). The casting session will take place at the HeartLove Place on 3229 N. MLK Drive from 10:00AM to 5:00PM. Sessions will continue each weekend, alternating between HeartLove Place and the Wisconsin African American Women’s Center on 3020 W. Vliet Street.

For more information about the film and the casting session, visit Give Me Liberty’s website and check out WUWM’ story on the film as well.
