414 (not so) Live: Shle Berry

There are two sides to Shle Berry: the lover and the fighter. Depending on the track, she’s either a suave romantic schooled by classic R&B or a provocateur with the soul of a battle rapper. We hear both sides of this talented artist in her archived performance from August 2019.

414 (not so) Live: De La Buena

640 427

Employing jazz harmonic sensibility and a deep-seated love of diverse cultures, De La Buena explores the textures and rhythms of Latin musics of the Americas with roots planted firmly in African Diasporic traditions.

Growing from a trio into a powerful 10-piece, the ensemble has been electrifying audiences with their own brand of Afro-Cuban and Latin Jazz. De La Buena, ever conscious of the influence and necessary respect for tradition, is still a band willing to inject sophisticated, psychedelic sensibilities into an aggressive, expansive framework.

414 (not so) Live: The Majestics

640 360

If you listened to our podcast Backspin: The Search for Milwaukee’s First Hip-Hop Song, we’ve got a treat for you!

The Majestics, a longtime Milwaukee funk group heavily featured in the podcast, dropped by the Radio Milwaukee studios for 414 Live. And it should be no surprise — they brought a full-energy, full-band performance.

Dressed in matching red performance outfits and doing the splits on stage, The Majestics performed familiar songs heard in the podcast including “The Key To Love” and “Class A.” The latter, they assert, is the first rap song to be recorded in the state.

The band, which formed in the 1960s, was central to our search for that first rap song recorded in Milwaukee. While we ultimately left it to the listeners to decide what constitutes “first,” we were honored to have them as our guests in studio, and their performance was one to remember.

414 (not so) Live: Liza Jane

640 426

This week on 414 Live we have the soulful voice of Liza Jane gracing our Radio Milwaukee studios after her debut release “Internet Girl No. 1” and the December single of “Unhappy Birthday.” We dive deep into the inspiration behind the music, the collection of creatives and collaborators Liza Jane surrounds herself with, her work in film, love for baking and the new EP that’s on its way.

We also talk about one of Liza’s favorite song titles of her music which is “Magic Trick” because the song has nothing to do with magic tricks but they added this sound effect to the end of the song as a joke but ended up keeping it in. To hear Liza Jane do her best impression of this sound, you’ll have to listen to the interview below.

She also offers the advice “if you’re creating something that you love and you’re creating something you are excited about, that’s exactly where you should be starting and the rest will follow.”

414 (not so) Live: Twan Mack

640 426

Twan Mack seeks to educate and entertain simultaneously through his work and that’s what he did with his performance on 414 Live. We got him in the studio just after his release of “Main Concern” and on the day of his premiere and collaboration with Solana called “Rewind.”

We discussed these new releases as well as Mack’s prolific background in beatboxing, collaborating, and creating a scene around himself. You’ll hear many different notable names of artists he’s worked with including Chuck Chillout, IshDARR, Speech from Arrested Development and the list goes on because he has a very open door policy on working with other people in that “if you’re dope and you think I’m dope we can work together.”

Twan Mack has an incredible background and real knowledge about the scene here in Milwaukee and lends some smart lines of advice warning “if you don’t stand for something, you’ll fall for anything” but most importantly he suggests to “educate yourself” and encourage the scene to support each other, here in the city.

414 (not so) Live: Funk Summit Bass Team

640 426

This week on 414 Live, we were graced with an eclectic, 11-piece glam funk outfit — Funk Summit Bass Team, who asked us to climb to the top of their “funk peak” and we did.

We chatted about their upcoming debut album, what it means to be the antithesis of normal, and the essence of glam. The band stress “we believe in challenging our ‘normativity’,” which comes off in their live performance. Almost all in a line on stage, it’s clear this is a family and describe themselves as a “big ole group of misfits who really enjoy making music.” They pride themselves in all things weird and all things fun.

The group offer some wholesome advice to local artists coming up in the scene to “just listen to your heart” and “say yes to everything and be kind.”

We were lucky to get an exclusive performance with the band in their unique, amazing style. Robbie in particular was loaned a royal outfit from a local Milwaukee area theater production and the band honored us with an extremely fun anthem about pizza called “Pizza Party on the Dance Floor.”
