For Day 20, we talked with second grade teacher Lisa Bitto from the Milwaukee Sign Language School. MSLS is an MPS school that serves deaf and hearing-impaired students.
What you may not realize is that they serve hearing students too. Siblings and children of the deaf or hearing impaired need to be able to communicate with their family members too and MSLS has been helping students develop signing skills and learn about deaf culture for over 12 years.

This piece finds Lisa with an unexpected name on her class roster. She first learned some basic signs from a neighbor when she was a kid. Needless to say she was surprised when she saw his name on he class list, except now it had a “Jr.” attached to it. Lisa is excited to be able to give back to the family that first exposed her to the deaf community.
