Milwaukee Urban League Recognizes Outstanding Students | Safe Streets, Healthy Kids 2012

The National Urban League is one of the oldest African-American service organizations in the country. Milwaukee’s branch has been here since the early 1900’s. But last week they were celebrating their younger members.

The Milwaukee Urban held their annual National Achievers Society Induction Ceremony at UW-Milwaukee to celebrate and recognize some of the city’s top students. Students are recommended by their schools, parents or people in the community. They also have to have maintained a GPA of 3.0 or higher and write an essay to be accepted.

As a special perk for outstanding students a special committee awarded 10 seniors with brand new laptop computers for college.

I spoke with Israel Powell, one of this year’s laptop winners about how he got to this point and what he hopes to do in the future.

Listen to the story below to hear audio from the ceremony, some history from Milwaukee Urban League President and CEO, Ralph Hollmon and how Israel’s Mom inspires him to stay motivated.
