Milwaukee Holiday Traditions: The Nutcracker

This year's Nutcracker, described by Milwaukee Ballet Artistic Director Michael Pink and principal dancers Susan Gartell and Justin Genna.

It is another sign Christmas is coming -- the Milwaukee Ballet's performance of  The Nutcracker opened over the weekend.

Every year, the Marcus Center for the Performing arts hosts numerous performances of the  The Nutcracker.  And Artistic Director Michael Pink says he confident 2012's show will be as good as you've seen.

"I like to think this production appeals to the full range of our audience," Pink said. "I really tried to make something that will engage people and give them that sense of escapism and adventure."

The production is one of Ballet's longstanding holiday traditions, and Pink's version of the show has been performed for nine seasons in Milwaukee.

The Nutcracker is also the longest-running individual show of the season, with performances each of the three weeks leading up to Christmas. And Pink says every show is special.

"Live theater is all about what happens in the moment.  It can never be repeated," he said. "It is exactly what happens here in the theater, in this split second."
