"Conrad Schmitt would go to Europe and bring back the greatest craftsmen that he could find."
-Gunar Gruenke, Conrad Schmitt Studios
For more than a century, Conrad Schmitt Studios have created and re-stored the
interiors of historic buildings in Milwaukee and throughout the world. Started by a son of Bavarian immigrants, Conrad Schmitt traveled the world to work on projects and hired the best artisans he could find. Stained glass windows and murals were their specialty.
The business remained in the Schmitt family until 1953, when Bernard O. Gruenke, a long-time employee, purchased the company. Gruenke worked with Schmitt on many projects around the world and wanted to keep the company name the same. "Conrad Schmitt and Grandpa had a really good reputation" say Gunar Gruenke. Today, Gunar is part of three generations of Gruenke's keeping the high-standards of Schmitt's early work alive in every restoration
job they do, big and small.
