Milwaukee Homeless Veterans Initiative

It's an unsettling statistic -- at least one fourth of Milwaukee's homeless are veterans.

That's according to Tracy Sperko, Executive Director of the  Milwaukee Homeless Veterans Initiative.

The non-profit serves hundreds of veterans every year, and it helps them not only to acquire an apartment, but it also provides a basic move-in kit for them to get settled.  That includes a couch, kitchen table, linens, pots and pans, and other everyday items most people would take for granted.

MHVI is always accepting donations at its north side location, too.  You can drop off furniture or kitchen items, cold weather gear, or other gently used household goods.

And this year, the organization is getting lots of attention.  The County Executive's and the Mayor's offices are both hosting toiletry drives to benefit the cause.  Area Walgreens locations are also collecting donations.  Plus, donation bins have been installed at the Pabst Theater, Riverside Theater, and Turner Hall.

Here's  where you can donate.
