After being closed for almost 15 years, the historic Avalon Theater at 2473 S. Kinnickinnic Avenue in Bay View has been given a new life thanks to the Neighborhood Theater Group.
As soon as you step into the lobby, you get a feel for what it was like when the theater opened in 1929. Lee Barczak, owner of the Neighborhood Theater Group says they took extra time to restore lobby elements to their original grandeur. From the tiling on the walls, to the original paint scheme, to new carpeting that gives a nod back to the original, no details were left untouched.
Barczak, a fan of movies and architecture, says the renovation and reopening of this theater has been his passion. "Neighborhood theaters, like every good business, can help that neighborhood have even greater cohesion and identity: bringing neighbors together." The theater includes a lounge and restaurant accessible to the non-movie going public 7-days a week.
