It was a packed house last week at the Zoblocki V.A. Medical Center, as dozens of veterans rolled out yoga mats for the first time.
They were among the first to attend a new series of free, drop-in yoga classes focused on relaxation and breathing.
The classes are open to any veteran who receives benefits at the V.A., no matter their skill level or age.
In addition to the physical benefits, Instructor Erin Bullock said yoga may help veterans clear their minds of disturbing thoughts, which is especially helpful for those suffering from PTSD.
"When these intrusive thoughts come in, we try to push them aside and really focus on our breath," Bullock said. "This might be a 60 minute part of their day when they're allowed to not think about anything but their breathing."
Yoga classes are offered every Tuesday night from 4 to 5 p.m. Advance registration is preferred, but not required, Bullock said.
