As spring turns into summer, those annual signs of the season are popping up everywhere. And one of the most recognizable summer sights is the red and green trolley serving Downtown Milwaukee.
It runs in a 40-minute loop, hitting all the major hotels, museums, restaurants and tourist destinations. Rides cost just $1, and you can hop on to explore the city Thursday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
And it's a way different experience than riding the city bus.
Inside, rows of charming slotted wood benches welcome riders, a metallic bell clangs at each stop, and rounded etched glass windows offer a unique view of the city. The cabin is equipped with one essential modern comfort -- powerful air conditioning -- offering relief during Milwaukee's humid summer.
But the best part of the ride is the personal touch the driver, Henry Davis, adds to the experience. Easy listening music fills the air inside the trolley, and every so often, Henry will share facts about notable neighborhoods and buildings along the loop.
Transit Express operates the trolley, with private support from Milwaukee Downtown, Visit Milwaukee, Historic Third Ward Association, Harley Davidson Museum, East Town Association, Milwaukee Art Museum, The Shops of Grand Avenue, Usinger Foundation, and Wisconsin Cheese Mart.
The trolley does not receive public funding.
