Disaster Passport Plays Koyaanisqatsi w/ Special Guest Michael Rossetto
Disaster Passport is a four-piece, instrumental world music ensemble based in Madison. The band's unique sound is built on the interplay of two banjos. One played in a traditional Appalachian style and the other in an African pop technique. Baritone electric guitar lends a Calexico-like, Southwest texture to the music. Percussion and vocal loops add a large hit of psychedelia to the mix.
In 2018, working alone and together, the members of Madison-based Disaster Passport spent 9 months composing their own soundtrack to the 1983 art movie Koyaanisqatsi. The name of the film is taken from a Hopi Indian word meaning "life out of balance." The film has no dialogue or narration. Director Godfrey Reggio set out to show via sweeping shots of nature and urban decay the threat humans pose to the environment and to each other. Philip Glass wrote the film's original score. The band plays their soundtrack live to a screening of the film. Madison's alt-weekly newspaper ISTHMUS chose their performance of the movie as one of the city's best live concerts of 2019 alongside performances by Alejandro Escovedo and Rhiannon Giddens.
