MKE Concert Pick: Spend a night at the David Wax Museum

Milwaukee’s concert scene has a lot going on, so we look at the shows coming up to find the ones you’ll look back on and be glad you went. Then we add them to our weekly Milwaukee Concert Picks sponsored by Educators Credit Union.

We all know that “when it rains, it pours.” True of weather, true of this week’s concert calendar! Is everyone trying to cram in all the shows before the big holiday weekend next week?

Fill up your live-music “dance card” with any number of great shows, emphasis on the local. There are a handful of great options Friday and Saturday night, and the warmup to the long weekend is David Wax Museum’s visit to Anodyne this Thursday, Nov. 21.

The Virginia-based band stopped by our space last May for a whirlwind Studio Milwaukee Session that left quite the impression. Perhaps you’re still impressed from that particular experience and have been hankering for another taste of their bright, horn-filled pop music. Perhaps you didn’t catch them that particular time and deeply regret your choice. Either way, Thursday is one you don’t want to miss.

For their return to Milwaukee, husband and wife musical talents David Wax and Suz Slezak will be at Anodyne as a duo, and word on the street (well, direct word from David Wax) is that they have a secret record in the works. You’ll get a taste of those songs in person at the show before they officially release the project in December.

If you’re into something more moody and angular this week, Okay Omen has you covered in a couple different ways. Milwaukee’s melodic punk rockers just shared a new single called “Denial” as they get ready to release their latest EP, Echoes of Loss. They’ll lean on some of that material and get local support from Snag, Jagalchi and Overhand at Cactus Club this Friday, Nov. 22.

And if it’s more local you crave — but more in the vein of soul, funk and jazz to get your groove on — Milwaukee Music Night Vol. 93 at The Cooperage has a night of music led by Milwaukee yacht-pop project Sleepy Gaucho, soulful funkster Cullah, jazz guitarist and crooner Josh Trimble, and funky indie project Torcado. All of them will take the stage (presumably one at a time) at the Cooperage this Friday.
