Sotomayor stay grounded while making other-worldly music

It's been 10 years since siblings Paulina and Raul Sotomayor joined forces to create the musical project that bears their last name. Born and raised in Mexico City, they take inspiration from their hometown and Latin America, blending Latin rhythms with electronic sounds.

That approach was immediately evident on their 2016 debut album Salvaje — 11 tracks that mixed their electronic elements with cumbia, dancehall, merengue and other Afro-Latin beats. “New Latin Wave” was a fairly new concept at the time, and Sotomayor quickly became part of it.

Two albums and a pandemic-related hiatus later, they kicked off 2026 with an electrifying new record that feels out of this world and very Mexican. We dive deep into WABI SABI in this interview as Sotomayor unpack the songs that came easiest, the ones that almost weren’t made and the joys of collaborating with multi-Grammy award winner Eduardo Cabra.
