In addition to their headlining performance, the members of Wilco will present their many side-projects and collaborate with other Eaux Claires artists. Singer and frontman Jeff Tweedy will join son Spencer Tweedy for their musical collaborative Tweedy; bassist and vocalist John Stirratt will perform with multi-instrumentalist Pat Sansone as The Autumn Defense; Mikael Jorgenson will reveal a new musical project, Quindar, named for space ‘quindar’ sounds taken from NASA archives, electronically re-mixed for an intergalactic feel; nationally renowned guitarist Nels Cline will perform with his partner, Yuka Honda, as part of a new ambient duo called cup; and finally, percussionist Glenn Kotche will perform a set in collaboration with Bon Iver drummer Sean Carey.
As always, Midwest talent will have a strong presence at Eaux Claires. In addition to Chicagoans Chance the Rapper and Wilco, jazz trio Happy Apple, rapper Velvet Negroni, and ‘prog-doom’ death metal band Zebulon Pike will represent nearby Minneapolis, while Detroit-based hip-hop artist Danny Brown will make his Eaux Claires debut. Minneapolis electronic drum-&-bass standout Poliça will remount Music For The Long Emergency, their classical/contemporary collaboration with European-chamber-ensemble, s-t-a-r-g-a-z-e, which was met with rave reviews after a sold-out performance in St. Paul this past fall.
International talent brings its own distinct flavor to Eaux Claires. Canadian songbird Feist will provide her signature ethereal and haunting sound; Latin Grammy award winner Julieta Venegas will woo audiences with her accordion and stirring vocals, and German electro-pop group Mouse on Mars will give a performance that is both avant-garde and versatile. Poliça collaborators, s-t-a-r-g-a-z-e, will also take part in a number of artist collaborations, while UK musician Kate Stables of This is the Kit will impart an earthy and honest folk quality to the festival.
Supplementing the diversified lineup, Eaux Claires will also introduce a new concept, Artists-in-Residence. This group, an assembled cast of notable musicians, will create an integral creative core, ready to jump in and contribute their talents to announced and unannounced performances across the entire weekend. Notable Artists-in-Residence include festival veterans Sam Amidon, Phil Cook, Bryce Dessner, Jenny Lewis, and The Staves. New collaborators to the festival, including Anaïs Mitchell, will also participate.
