Shura picks "This Is Your Life" by Hannah Cohen
This is 5 songs we can’t stop listening to, and my guest today is Shura. Shura has released one of my favorite albums of 2019. The album is called “ Forevher.” I just love the whole flirtatious vibe of this album. We have been playing the song “ Religion, (U Can Lay Your Hands On Me).” My guest today is Shura.
So Shura, what is one song that you can’t stop listening to?
So one song that I can not stop listening to is “This is Your Life” by Hannah Cohen, who has been on tour with us in the states. It’s the opening track to her record, "Welcome Home," and it’s the first song of her’s that I ever heard. That would be my choice.
What do you think that she is doing differently than other artists that don’t capture your attention?
I think there’s something, it’s kind of everything. Firstly, her voice is extraordinary. This song opens with just her vocals. And she does something which is, to me, very interesting which is hold this long, very high note with absolutely no vibrato. Which is kind of a really really difficult thing to do, one of the reasons you need vibrato is because you’re fluttering around. To pick one note out of the sky and to just stick with it really confidently. That’s why I remember it being played in my apartment by my partner, and I had ran out of where I was, I think I was doing emails or writing, and I just ran out of my room and just said, “Who the F is this?”
So I had never really heard anything like that, or I certainly hadn’t heard anything like that for a long time. I couldn’t tell whether it was kind of this lost gem from the '70s or something that was new. So I think what she does is sort of really captures this kind of old style.
I mean, it really reminds me of some of the things that I was trying to do on my record, but she’s done it much better than I have. That kind of sound of a forgotten time, but kind of modernized.
