"I'm not versed in the politics of all African nations, but I can assume through the time period that they were singing about colonialism ... or inequality and inequity which are at the root of all political songs regardless of the time period or government," Shungudzo wisely quips while talking about one of her favorite groups, The Lijadu Sisters, who made protest music in Nigeria in the 1970s.
The interview started with a simple question about what song she would play if she were a DJ on 88Nine and like it so often does, we ended up talking about so much more. We talked about colonialism and how it was taught to each of us. As a Zimbabwean, Shungudzo brought her perspective to the subject and song and packed a whole lot of depth into this 10 minute interview.
