Cuco's 'Best Disaster' takes the tres leches cake

It was 2018 when 88Nine sent me to cover Los Dells, one of the Midwest’s first all-Latin music festivals in Wisconsin. On that rainy, muddy weekend, my daughter and I entered the grounds not really knowing what to expect.

We both were excited to take in the major Reggaeton acts, like Zion y Lennox, Wisin Yandel and (before the explosion) Bad Bunny. But among the plethora of new artists, the surprise musical find was Cuco.

Like my daughter, Cuco (aka Omar Banos) was born in June 1998 and is an only child. The then-20-year-old was fresh from dropping a few projects, and I remember him putting on a very special performance, playing several instruments, hitting us with dreamy vocals and exuding positive energy that left a mark on the small crowd of us who gathered for his early set.

Our Add of the Week from Cuco, “Best Disaster," is a single that dives deep, evolves your emotional senses and flourishes nicely, all while poking at the heartstrings of his core audience. It feels like a continuation of sorts from his star-studded 2022 project, Fantasy Gateway (which is a good thing).

The music video for this release is the sweetened condensed milk on a tres leches cake. This Chicano from Inglewood, Calif., represents the future — and we are here for it.

This week's other adds

  • "Buy You a New Attitude," Tianna Esperanza
  • "We Were We Still Are," Future Utopia (feat. Kae Tempest)
  • "Colors," Tagua Tagua
