Every Monday, Add of the Week unveils all the new songs going into the 88Nine on-air playlist, with one hand-picked selection put in the spotlight by a member of our music team.
Not too many musicians can outmatch the uber-talented Brittany Howard, so she’s just left to compete with herself on most occasions. She does just that on her new single, “What Now.”
Plainly, Howard gets gritty and give-all, lining up her fuzzed-out guitar to ride sidecar with her amazing voice for an exciting, emotional journey. And what’s the driver of the doubled-up dose of oomph? A relationship gone wrong that so easily could’ve been right:
I don't wanna get used to all the tensionI don't wanna worry what kind of mood you're inI don't wanna fall for your potentialI've been staying open you don't wanna growI've been seeing patterns that I can't ignore …… If you want someone to hate then blame it on me
Taking the blame and exiting rather than treading water in a quagmire, Howard sonically shifts it into the next gear and gives fans a tantalizing sound to look forward to on her forthcoming record, WHAT NOW, set to roll out at an undetermined date via Island Records.
You can listen to “What Now” at the top of the page, as well as on 88Nine by tuning your FM dial in Milwaukee or streaming worldwide on our website and mobile app. That’s also where you’ll find our only other addition to the playlist this week, Mitski’s “My Love Mine All Mine.”
