Every Monday, Add of the Week unveils all the new songs going into the 88Nine on-air playlist, with one hand-picked selection put in the spotlight by a member of our music team.
Melbourne trio Glass Beams create sounds that are rooted in sand. The “serpentine psychedelia” outfit anchors their grooves with cosmic instrumentation and worldly polyrhythms. The band heightens their air of mystery by wearing intricate masks to obscure their identity, keeping the focus on the music and not the people behind it.
Founding member Rajan Silva rekindles childhood memories from his father, who emigrated to Melbourne from India in the late-’70s, and draws inspiration from artists like Ravi and Anoushka Shankar, George Harrison and Muddy Waters. New single “Mahal” — title track of their EP arriving March 22 on Ninja Tune Records — speaks to this cross-pollination of those sounds.
You can listen to “Mahal” right here, on your radio by tuning your FM dial to 88Nine in Milwaukee, or streaming worldwide on our website and mobile app.
