Bon Iver's first non-studio album kicks off series of archival releases

Julian Bajsel

Justin Vernon just announced the return of his Eaux Claires music festival after a long hiatus, and today he shared the upcoming release of Bon Iver’s first non-studio album and archival series, VOLUMES:.

The series will include music from live shows, demos, and unreleased recordings that showcase the many eras of the Eau Claire-based indie-folk group Bon Iver since their founding in 2006.

The first installment — VOLUMES: ONE "SELECTIONS FROM MUSIC CONCERTS 2019-2023 BON IVER 6 PIECE BAND" — includes 10 essential Bon Iver performances spanning from 2019 to 2023 (the year of Bon Iver’s last live concert to date), offering listeners a unique experience compared with traditional studio albums.

"This particular set of 10 songs is like, 'Here, if you've never heard Bon Iver, or you have and you didn't like it, this might be for you,'” said Vernon, who began working on VOLUMES:ONE in 2020. “This is what we became. This is really us at our best. This is it.”

In addition to today’s announcement, the band released a recording and newly unearthed video of the Nov. 5, 2022, performance of “Heavenly Father” at the Mediolanum in Milan, Italy. The performance hints at what else can be expected of the experimental series.

The album arrives April 3 in both physical and digital formats and is modeled after Bob Dylan's Bootleg Series and the Neil Young Archives. The tracklist will span eras and include music from the 2016 album 22, A Million, the 2019 album i,i, and the COVID-era song “P.D.L.I.F.” The series will allow longtime fans and new listeners alike to connect with the music of Bon Iver from a new perspective. It’s available to pre-order now.
